Dr. Benedict Beckeld (born 1980 in Uppsala, Sweden) is a Swedish-American philosopher, author, and poet known for his work on “oikophobia” (cultural self-contempt or aversion to one’s own civilization), especially in his book Western Self-Contempt: Oikophobia in the Decline of Civilizations (Cornell University Press). He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy and classical philology from the University of Heidelberg, taught philosophy, Greek, and Latin at institutions including the American University of Paris, volunteered as a teacher in Namibia, and since 2014 has focused on writing about aesthetics, political philosophy, history, and contemporary culture while living in New York.
