  • Reading the August 1981 Heavy Metal magazine, saw this article by a Ralph T Castle about the Hugo awards. It brought to mind a HB video about The Sad Puppies. The short little article was called “De-Hugoed”, Here’s a quote;

    “The annual Hugo Awards are voted by sf readers who have joined the World Science Fiction Convention, and this year’s nominees live up to a long tradition of mediocrity.”

    Castle calls several of the nominees dull, safe, boring, and calls one book “A fitting end for this overpraised poseur of the Me Decade”. He ends by writing;

    “That one of these will become “best science-fiction novel of the year” is an indictment not of science fiction but of the people who read it and vote for the award. Be warned–avoid any book with “Hugo Award Winner” plastered across its cover.”
